The Roxburgh Gorge Trail

The Roxburgh Gorge trail is a popular biking trail located in Central Otago, deep within the South Island of New Zealand. The trail covers a distance of approximately 34 kms and runs through the stunning Roxburgh Gorge. It offers bikers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The trail is known for its rugged terrain, making it a favourite for those looking for a shorter distance trail with a few more challenges.

The Roxburgh Gorge trail is situated along the banks of the mighty Clutha River (Mata-Au), one of the largest rivers in New Zealand. The river is known for its crystal-clear waters, which provide a serene backdrop for the trail. This means that bikers on the trail can take in the scenic beauty of the area as they navigate their way through rocky outcrops and historic gold-mining sites.

Boat Transfers on the Trail

One of the highlights of the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is the 13km of incomplete trail. This leads to an adventure not usually found on a bike trail. Departing from either Doctors Creek or Shingle Creek you can take a jet boat transfer which speeds you through the gorge (spins are optional). Learn more about the fascinating history of the area and enjoy commentary and several stops. Here you can explore the remains of old gold mining settlements, including miners accommodation, old sluice gates and water races.

In cooler months the jet boat offers heated hand rails, heated seats and warm jackets, hats and gloves for everyone who needs it. This means bikers can enjoy the boat transfer at any time of the year.

The Roxburgh Gorge trail is accessible to most bikers, with a well-maintained track that caters to everyone. The trail is completed in a day or can be joined with the Clutha Gold Trail for a longer bike adventure.

In short, the Roxburgh Gorge Trail is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty and rich history of Central Otago. The stunning scenery, rugged terrain, and historic gold mining sites offer an unforgettable adventure for bikers of all ages and abilities.
